Hammy Hamilton Practice Flute w/Book & CD
This flute is quieter than the Tony Dixon, but its tone is rich and resonant. It's well-tuned, with a balanced pitch. It's durable and requires little maintenance. Its downside is that the flute can't be disassembled; the aluminum tube is intact. When fully inserted, the tube is tuned to the reference 144Hz. If you need to tune higher, you'll need to trim a few millimeters of the tube to achieve a higher pitch. It's a great addition to a professional's collection, but it's also excellent for amateurs and students. I highly recommend it.

Hammy Hamilton Practice Flute w/Book & CD
I've had a couple high end blackwood Hammy Flutes over the years. 1 from his early 90s endeavours with the "reversed" embouchure. Amazing tonal dynamics easy to play. If you want to sound like Conal Ograda these are the ones to look for. Another one from his later more conventionally cut Flutes. Not as wild as the 90 Flutes but still lovely big tone and a joy to play. So I had high hopes for this practice flute. But it was awful. . . Crudely cut embouchure, terrible tone and dynamics. I get it's a cheap plastic and aluminium design to get kids into flute. But I wouldn't let this within 100m of any kid with potential as it is likely to put them off flute for life.
Maybe I got a dud.
Reply:
Paul, it doesn't sound right, sound like the embouchure is off and it has changed the playability. My best guess is it's a dud because these are good flutes for learning on. Can you email service@mcneelamusic.com so we can get it back and check, and refund you your money.

Hammy Hamilton Practice Flute w/Book & CD
I play mostly stringed instruments but I like to dabble a bit with a flute. So this instrument might not be for the more serious player but I’m very pleased with it, great value for money. Good strong tone, easy to play and no maintenance. I’m a bit surprised that Hammy would be making these, not what he’s known for. I got it in the sale and it came with Hammy’s book, which is excellent, deeply researched and scholarly but very readable. For a beginner or even intermediate, you can’t go wrong at the price.

Hammy Hamilton Flute
Great practice flute with an unexpected rich tone considering it is not made of wood. Good for throwing in your bag on a trip to the beach or somewhere wet or extremely dry, when you might worry about damaging a wood instrument. Virtually indestructible. And tunable too, which is a big plus.
