What Is a Melodica?

The melodica is a free-reed instrument similar to the accordion or concertina. It features a keyboard on top and you play it by blowing air through a mouthpiece fitted at the side of the instrument.

Pressing a key opens a hole, allowing air to flow through the reeds, thus producing the sound.

The melodica as we know it today was first produced by Hohner in the 1950s and popularised in the 1960s. Today it's played in all genres of music from jazz to pop, and even folk music.

Melodicas can be great musical toys or incredibly effective and affordable music education tools, particularly for music theory and keyboard performance. They can also be used by great musicians however to produce quality musical performances, making it the perfect instrument for all ages and abilities.
